Bodycam video shows illegal immigrant truck driver speaking limited English with New Mexico officer
Newly released bodycam video shows illegal immigrant truck driver Harjinder Singh being pulled over in a traffic stop with a New Mexico trooper in July. New bodycam footage has been released showing illegal immigrant truck driver Harjinder Singh struggling with limited English after he was pulled over by police for speeding in New Mexico last month - a detail that has since become a major talking point in the case. The footage shows Singh -- the suspect accused of jackknifing his 18-wheeler while making an illegal U-turn in Florida that killed three people -- being stopped by a New Mexico State Police officer on July 3 for allegedly driving 60 mph in a 45-mph zone. During the interaction, Singh appears apologetic as he receives a ticket from the trooper. He initially communicates without issue until after signing paperwork and preparing to leave, when the officer struggles to understand what the trucker is saying.

WavePulse: Real-time Content Analytics of Radio Livestreams
Mittal, Govind, Gupta, Sarthak, Wagle, Shruti, Chopra, Chirag, DeMattee, Anthony J, Memon, Nasir, Ahamad, Mustaque, Hegde, Chinmay
Radio remains a pervasive medium for mass information dissemination, with AM/FM stations reaching more Americans than either smartphone-based social networking or live television. Increasingly, radio broadcasts are also streamed online and accessed over the Internet. We present WavePulse, a framework that records, documents, and analyzes radio content in real-time. While our framework is generally applicable, we showcase the efficacy of WavePulse in a collaborative project with a team of political scientists focusing on the 2024 Presidential Elections. We use WavePulse to monitor livestreams of 396 news radio stations over a period of three months, processing close to 500,000 hours of audio streams. These streams were converted into time-stamped, diarized transcripts and analyzed to track answer key political science questions at both the national and state levels. Our analysis revealed how local issues interacted with national trends, providing insights into information flow. Our results demonstrate WavePulse's efficacy in capturing and analyzing content from radio livestreams sourced from the Web. Code and dataset can be accessed at \url{https://wave-pulse.io}.

Spectral gap-based deterministic tensor completion
Harris, Kameron Decker, López, Oscar, Read, Angus, Zhu, Yizhe
Tensor completion is a core machine learning algorithm used in recommender systems and other domains with missing data. While the matrix case is well-understood, theoretical results for tensor problems are limited, particularly when the sampling patterns are deterministic. Here we bound the generalization error of the solutions of two tensor completion methods, Poisson loss and atomic norm minimization, providing tighter bounds in terms of the target tensor rank. If the ground-truth tensor is order $t$ with CP-rank $r$, the dependence on $r$ is improved from $r^{2(t-1)(t^2-t-1)}$ in arXiv:1910.10692 to $r^{2(t-1)(3t-5)}$. The error in our bounds is deterministically controlled by the spectral gap of the sampling sparsity pattern. We also prove several new properties for the atomic tensor norm, reducing the rank dependence from $r^{3t-3}$ in arXiv:1711.04965 to $r^{3t-5}$ under random sampling schemes. A limitation is that atomic norm minimization, while theoretically interesting, leads to inefficient algorithms. However, numerical experiments illustrate the dependence of the reconstruction error on the spectral gap for the practical max-quasinorm, ridge penalty, and Poisson loss minimization algorithms. This view through the spectral gap is a promising window for further study of tensor algorithms.

A Florida Man Is Suing Tesla for a Scary Autopilot Crash
When Shawn Hudson decided to buy a Tesla Model S last year, Autopilot was a key selling point. His commute was brutal--125 miles each way, nearly all of it on the highway--and he figured the semi-autonomous driving system would make his life easier. Over 98,000 miles of driving, he used it regularly, letting the computer keep the car in its lane and away from other cars. "I was sold," he told reporters at a press conference Tuesday morning. He would relax during the long ride, checking his phone and sending emails.

Orlando gunman used gay dating app, visited LGBT nightclub on other occasions, witnesses say
The gunman who attacked a Florida LGBT nightclub had attended the club before the attack and had used a gay dating and chat app, witnesses said. Kevin West, a regular at Pulse nightclub, said Omar Mateen messaged him on and off for a year before the shooting using the gay chat and dating app Jack'd. West was dropping off a friend at the club when he noticed Mateen – whom he knew by sight but not by name – crossing the street wearing a dark cap and carrying a black cellphone about 1 a.m., an hour before the shooting. "He walked directly past me. I said, 'Hey,' and he turned and said, 'Hey,'" and nodded his head, West said.
